Cake Slices in NYC That Will Give You An Out-of-Body Experience

If you know me, even at just a surface level, you know about my love for cake. It is hands down my favorite dessert. I’ve tried a ridiculous amount of flavors, ranging from classics like confetti to more creative flavors like ube, fruity pebbles, and oatmeal cream pie. To me, a good cake has multiple textural components, strong flavors, and a rather dense, moist crumb. As for my credentials, below is a photo of a custom-made cake I designed and flavored for my 18th birthday.

The taste of this two-foot tall, 6-layered beauty is something I miss dearly. As seen on the right side photo, my cake consisted of alternating layers of fruity pebbles cake, infused with fruity pebbles cereal milk pudding, vanilla cake, cream cheese frosting, fruity pebble flakes, and clusters of fruity pebbles cake crumble. It was then coated with vanilla buttercream and more fruity pebbles flakes. She is my life’s greatest achievement.

Now that you’ve seen that I am a true cake connoisseur, I have curated a list of four cake slices you should try in NYC!

1.) Little Cupcake Bakeshop - Dreaming Princess & Strawberry Shortcake

If you haven’t heard of Little Cupcake Bakeshop (LCB), let me put you on. They offer at least seven different cake flavors each day and also sell amazing cheesecake, bars, cookies, and even banana pudding. If you’re craving something sweet but don’t know exactly what, LCB is the way to go. After trying at least five different cake flavors thus far, my top two are definitely the Strawberry Shortcake and Dreaming Princess, which consists of almond-flavored cake, layers of raspberry jam, and vanilla buttercream, coated in a fluffy meringue frosting—I’m drooling.

Notable mention to the Brooklyn Blackout cake which has been deemed as the best chocolate cake in America.

2.) Billy’s Bakery - Banana Cake Slice

An absolute OG NYC bakery, Billy’s Bakery is known for its cupcakes, but I argue that the banana cake is the real showstopper. The cream cheese frosting is like no other, with its subtle tartness and incredibly smooth mouthfeel. They have four different locations across the city, so I highly recommend you give it a shot if there’s one near you.

3.) Doc D’s Southern Desserts - Red Velvet, Pistachio

Okay, I will admit, Doc D’s is pretty far from the NYU area. But if you want some authentic red velvet cake, Doc D’s Southern Desserts is a must! They are known to have the best red velvet cake, and I can vouch for its incredibly tender, moist crumb and not-too-sweet cream cheese frosting. The cake is so light that I could genuinely eat an entire 6-inch all by myself.

I’ve only tried one other cake flavor from the variety they offer, and I was surprised that I actually liked it more than their red velvet. The nutty pistachio flavor goes so well with the cream cheese frosting and I highly recommend it. Also, make sure you try the banana pudding too—I’ve heard it’s better than Magnolia Bakery’s!

4.) Veniero’s Bakery- New York Cheesecake, Torta di Mandorle

Established in 1894, Veniero’s Bakery has been serving legendary traditional, and modernized, Italian desserts right across from NYU’s Founders Hall and Third North Residence Hall. Their menu is quite extensive, but they are most well-known for their New York Cheesecake, featured in the photo above. This was truly mind-blowing and I can confidently say, it was the best cheesecake I have ever tried. Although it lacks a graham cracker crust, its ridiculously smooth and creamy texture was so good my eyes rolled to the back of my head

But of course, I couldn’t try just one dessert, so I also got the cannoli, the Torta Di Mandorle, featured on Food Network, and the lobster tail (not shown). All of them blew me away. It’s clear that Veniero’s prioritizes quality ingredients, handmade with love and passion. If you are looking for the best cheesecake of your life, go to Veniero’s. If you like a variety of textures and marzipan, get the Torta Di Mandorle. If you just want some damn good Italian pastries, do yourself a favor and go to Veniero’s.

One of my worst fears is spending money on a cake slice that doesn’t live up to the hype. In a city like NYC, where everything is pricey, every bite should be worth it. My list guarantees that you will get the bang for your buck and happily savor every last bite. Until my next cake adventure, the establishments included here offer an endless amount of flavors to keep your sweet tooth satisfied for a long time.
